Remembering Tony Wasser
The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Anton “Tony” Wasser. Dedicated to this sport, Tony was a significant piece of the Metropolitan golfing community.
Tony Wasser was a long standing member of the Metropolitan volunteer committee, having served as a Rules Official for over 30 years. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran, and following his service worked for Monsanto. Tony loved the game and remained connected through the years, finding ways to give back. He did so by learning the Rules of Golf and joining the Metropolitan Rules Committee. Here from the beginning of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, Tony has served as a rules official at countless Metropolitan Championships and USGA Qualifiers. He was also a habitual attendee of the SLAGRO (St. Louis Area Golf Rules Officials) meetings, listening and participating in the discussions to continue to grow his knowledge of the rules. During the formative years of the association, Tony lent his time and expertise to the Course Rating Committee. He was part of the crew that worked diligently to get the courses across the area, but most specifically in Southern Illinois rated and re-rated. Together with his fellow volunteers and friends, around 50 courses across the area were rated to ensure accurate data for golfers during that time.
Tony stayed committed to the Metropolitan Rules Committee up until the very end. Most recently, he assisted as a Rules Official at the Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship in September. He also participated virtually in the last monthly SLAGRO meeting on October 9. Tony had a true passion for the Rules of Golf and took great pride in assisting the Metropolitan at our Championships and USGA Qualifying Rounds. Tony’s commitment, knowledge, and kindness will be deeply missed.
Tony Wasser passed away on October 15, 2025. He was 89 years old. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow golf community.
