Piar Leads the 34th Metropolitan Women's Amateur
St. Louis, MO - It was a beautiful day at Algonquin Golf Club for the 34th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur Championship. Twenty-two ladies put their hand in to compete for the Jayne M. Watson Trophy. Eighteen women signed up to play in the net flighted divisions to bring the total field size to 40. The championship division played 6,107 yards and the flighted divisions played 5,131 yards. The course played to a par 71 and all players started on Hole 10.
The championship division got things started first this morning. 2022 Champion, Gracie Piar, is back in the field this year and has made a good showing to start off the week. Piar of the Metropolitan eClub had a slower start, making no birdies on the first nine of the day, but a reset at the turn had Piar card back-to-back birdies on Holes 1 and 2. Piar finished Round 1 on top of the leaderboard at four-over (+4) par. Jamie Daniels of the Metropolitan eClub started the day with a birdie on the first hole. Daniels tried to hold on but a few bogeys left her to end the day in second at seven-over (+7) par. Paula Sanchez Lozano of Old Hickory Golf Club, Tess Guignon of Gateway PGA Junior Golf Club, and Annabelle Bush of Whitmoor Country Club all finish the day tied for third at eight-over (+8) par. Anais Oge of Family Golf & Learning Center, Emma Hill of the Metropolitan eClub, and Bridget Hoogendijk of Old Hickory Golf Club sit five back of the lead at nine-over (+9) par in a tie for sixth.
The flighted divisions followed behind today. The flighted divisions play utilizing strokes and all scores are reflective of the applied strokes. Nanette Baker of Norwood Hills Country Club topped Flight A today. With 6 birdies, Baker returned a score of net even (E) par. Maria Morrison of the St. Louis Women’s Golf Association is not far behind after a first round of net two-over (+2) par. She is followed by Sue Biederman of the St. Louis Women’s Golf Association at net five-over (+5) par.
In Flight B, Sally Gordon of St. Louis Country Club sits on top after the first round. Gordon carded four birdies to come in at net one-over (+1) par. Alicia Anderson of the St. Louis Women’s Golf Association brought in a score of net four-over (+4) par. Pam Lenhard of the St. Louis Women’s Golf Association leaves the first day in third at net eleven-over (+11) par.
Players will return tomorrow for the second and final round. Gracie Piar, Nanette Baker, and Sally Gordon will look to stay on top of their respective divisions tomorrow to bring home the hardware.
