Weldon, Souchek Advance to 89th USGA Public Links Championship

14aplodellKyle Weldon turned in the low round of the 36-hole US APL Qualifying Tuesday with a 3-under 68 to earn his second consecutive trip to the US Amateur Public Links Championship July 14-20 at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, KS.  Weldon would birdie holes 15, 16 and 17 coming in to finish at 139, 3-under for the two days.

Steven Souchek and Mark Gardiner found themselves tied at 142 for the second qualifying spot and went back to 18 for a playoff.  Souchek would make  par after Gardiner hooked his approach shot into the hazard left and make bogey to earn a spot in the US APL.

Gardiner would get the 1st Alternate position and Mitchell Rutledge was 2nd Alternate at 144.  This is the 89th and final US Amateur Public Links Championship to be played as the USGA is retiring the championship after this season.

Many thanks to Aberdeen Golf Club for stepping up and providing a tremendous test for another USGA Qualifier.  Matt Odell (picutred above) with John Kueper, is GM/Superintendent of Aberdeen GC.
