Long takes 18th Metropolitan Amateur title

Old Hickory's Adam Long posted a 1-over par 211 then watched as his two closest pursuers - Norwood's Skip Berkmeyer and Meadowbrook's Justin Bardgett - attempt chances to tie at the 18th green of the 18th playing of the Metropolitan Amateur Championship. Berkmeyer lipped out his 13-foot birdie putt while Bardgett's chip shot from 22 feet spun out of the cup. Long, a junior to be at Duke University, has played a predominantly national schedule for the past few years. His win at Norwood was his first significant amateur title in Missouri.

USGA Senior Amateur Qualifying to visit Dalhousie GC



Dalhousie Golf Club
in Cape Girardeau, Mo., will play host to the 54th USGA Senior Amateur Championship Qualifying on Thursday, Aug. 28. Forty-three (43) players will compete on the Gary Nicklaus- designed course for two (2) qualifying spots
in this year's championship, to take place Sept. 20-25 at Shady Oaks Golf Club
in Fort Worth, Texas.

Norwood Hills' Skip Berkmeyer is looking to win his third straight MAGA Player of the Year award, while Meadowbrook's Scott Thomas looks to win his first Senior Player of the Year award. Berkmeyer's closest challengers include Scott Langley, Darren Lundgren, Adam Long and Justin Bardgett. Thomas leads former Walker Cupper Jim Holtgrieve in the Senior Division.

Berkmeyer, Moloney advance to Mid-Amateur

Ballwin's Skip Berkmeyer (Norwood Hills)  fired a 2-under par 69 to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying at Lake Forest Country Club. Clayton's Ted Moloney (Fox Run) tied Brad Niemann of Newburgh, Ind. for second. Each golfer matched par to earn the final two spots at the 28th U.S. Mid-Amateur, slated for Sept. 6-11 at Milwaukee Country Club.

Playoff Fever: Singh takes lead with win at The Barclays;

Jay Williamson vaults to No. 65 on points list



Vijay Singh birdied the second playoff hole at Ridgewood Country Club to win the Barclays, the first event of the 2008 FedEx Cup series. What's at stake for the winner? A $10 million payday when the series concludes at the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The third leg of the FedEx Cup, The BMW Championship, will come to Bellerive Country Club Sept. 1-7. The top 70 players will advance to St. Louis.

St. Louisan Jay Williamson, who finished in a tie for 31st at The Barclays, moved up to 65th on the points list.

108th U.S. Amateur Championship

New Zealander Danny Lee becomes youngest champion

New Zealand's Danny Lee claimed the 108th U.S. Amateur title Sunday at Pinehurst, and in doing so became the youngest champion in the event's storied history. Lee, who beat 19-year-old Drew Kittleson in the finals, 5 and 4, narrowly edges out Tiger Woods as the youngest champion. The Amateur put an exclamation mark on a three-week run that saw Lee win the Western Amateur, finish tied for 20th in a PGA Tour event and now earn his first USGA title. (photo by John Mummert/USGA)

Schriewer wins shootout

Bogey Hills Country Club's Chelsea Schriewer (right, with the Jayne Watson Trophy) rallied late on Tuesday, finishing birdie, par, par to overtake ten-time champion Ellen Port and win her first Metropolitan Women's Amateur title on her home course. Schriewer, 21, a senior at Mizzou, posted a two-day 2-under par 140 to edge Port by a shot at the 16th playing of the MAGA Women's Amateur Championship.

Play Aug. 29-Sept. 1 and Support Patriot Golf Day

More than a dozen MAGA clubs and courses will participate in this year's PATRIOT GOLF DAY promotion, designed to help families of fallen military heroes. From Friday, Aug. 29 through Monday, Sept. 1, golfers nationwide will be asked to donate a minimum of $1 in support of Patriot Golf Day, supported by the United States Golf Association and the Professional Golfers Association of America. All funds raised will benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation to provide educational scholarships for families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.
