Williamson to take his swing at Torrey Pines
St. Louisan Jay Williamson, who earned the final qualifying
spot at December's PGA Tour Qualifying School, will finally make his 2009 debut at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.
Despite earning $758,862 and nearly winning at the John Deere Classic in 2008, Williamson slid outside the exempt list of 125 when he struggled in the season's final six events.
After finishing 137th on the 2008 Money List, Williamson was forced to return to Q School in order to remain on Tour. A strong finish at PGA West allowed him to finish on the cut line and advance. However, his 25th place finish at Q School forced him to wait until mid-February to find a spot in a PGA Tour field.
The Buick Invitational, played on both the North and South Courses at Torrey Pines, runs from Feb. 5-8. Williamson is slated to tee off at 11:50 a.m. St. Louis time on Thursday, starting on Torrey Pines' North Course with fellow competitors John Huston and J.J. Henry.
Tiger Woods is the defending champion but will not compete due to injury. Rocco Mediate, who lost in a playoff to Woods at the 2008 U.S. Open, also held at Torrey Pines, announced he was pulling out of the Buick Invitational due to personal matters.
