21st METROPOLITAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - AUGUST 11-13

Penfield Adds Name to Jim Tom Blair Trophy

Ryan Penfield made it back-to-back wire-to-wire Champions of the Metropolitan Amateur. After an opening round 2-under 69 on Thursday at St. Louis CC, Penfield added rounds of 70 and 75 to capture the title with a 1-over 214 total. His name will be added to the Jim Tom Blair Trophy along with other area greats such as Holtgrieve, Bliss and his final round playing partner Skip Berkmeyer.

Penfield, who graduated from UMSL this spring and had a great collegiate career for the Tritons, battled down the stretch with Berkmeyer and St. Louis CC member Jack Eisenbeis. Eisenbeis was in the penultimate group and was putting himself at the top of the leaderboard all day.

At the 14th Hole Penfield made a bogey to come back to 1-over par, at that time a 1 shot lead over Eisenbeis who birdied 14 in front of him and Ben Crancer. Crancer would post the Championship's low round of 67 Saturday to post a 2-over 215 and put himself into contention and ultimately runner-up.

The other great story of this Championship is St. Louis CC! The C.B Macdonald gem definitely showed its teeth and proved that length does not have to be the defense of a golf course. On the card, it was 6526 yards, but at the end it was a wonderful test to crown the 21st Amateur Champion.
