Lundgren wins 22nd
Normandie Amateur by one shot
Fox Run's Darren Lundgren (putting for par at Normandie's 18th hole) posted a 36-hole, 1-under par 141 to edge two golfers by a shot to win the 22nd Normandie Amateur Sunday at Normandie Golf Club. The event was sponsored by Dent Wizard.
Lundgren, whose first-round 68 was a shot better than 69s posted by Fox Run's Patrick Riordan and Drew Pranger, battled to post a final-round 73 to edge Norwood Hills' Skip Berkmeyer (72-70-142) and Persimmon Woods' Brian Kennedy (71-71-142).
Lundgren, a former collegiate standout at Rollins College in Florida, overcame four three-putts in his final round with birdies at Normandies's seventh, eighth and 13th holes. The 25-year-old mortgage broker reached the par-5 seventh in two shots and two-putted for birdie, and then drove the par-4 eighth and two-putted for another birdie. He nearly drove the par-4 13th and made a third birdie.
"The key, though, was at (the par-3) 16th," Lundgren said. "I hit the bunker and it skipped about a foot out. I made good chip and a really tough 7-foot par putt that saved my round."
Three golfers - Norwood Hills' John Anderson (72-73-145), Fox Run's Patrick Riordan (69-76-145) and Meadowbrook's Scott Thomas (71-74-145) shared fourth place.
