Migdal, Rennegarbe win Metropolitan Junior Amateur titles

Ballwin's Joe Migdal (left) parred the second playoff hole to edge Chesterfield's Adam Welch (pictured at right) for the overall title of the 9th Metropolitan Junior Amateur Championship at Forest Park. Each golfer completed the 36-hole competition at 3-over 143.

Shaina Rennegarbe, a 17-year-old senior at Okawville High School, won the girls championship firing rounds of 73-74-147 for a 13-stroke win over St. Charles' Molly Edwards (pictured below right).

Rennegarbe (left), who said she had few fond memories of previous visits to Forest Park, said more accuracy off the tee helped her to the convincing win. "I really didn't like this course. I was always hitting it in the tall grass the last couple of tournaments here, so I wasn't real confident coming in."

Playing in her first Metropolitan Junior Championship, the Addieville, Ill., golfer found more fairways and far more success. "I played really well both days and kept it under control," she said. "I hit a lot of good wedges and putted well too."

Migdal, a senior at DeSmet, held a one-shot lead heading into Tuesday's final round. He backed up his first-round 69 with a 4-over 74 on Wednesday. His birdie at the par-3 17th gave him a one-shot advantage heading to the 600-yard par-5 closing hole. But Migdal bogeyed No. 18 to slide back into a tie with Welch, a junior at CBC. After making pars at the first playoff, Migdal won his first major junior title by parring the second playoff hole. Defending champion Dan Schaller finished third at 147.

Bryce Dolan (pictured at left) of Washington, Mo., fired rounds of 74-78-152 to edge Wildwood's Teddy Jones (75-78-153) by a shot in the boys 14-15 division. Mark Stahlhuth (pictured at right) of Labadie, Mo., won the boys 12-13 division, shooting 89-95-184.
