BULLETIN: Parkway West's Dolan wins state 2A title

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Parkway West senior Catherine Dolan had a premonition she might be standing atop the podium at the Class 2 state golf tournament.
"I dreamt the night before that I won," she said. "I woke up and realized I still had to play two days of golf."
Dolan made her dream come true; she cruised around the Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club course with consistency and shot a second-round 74 Tuesday to win the Class 2 tournament with a two-day total of 146.
Dolan, who was tied with Howell Central's Mabrie Cain at 72 after the first day, tied the state tournament record for the best 36-hole score.
"It's so exciting; I think I'm in shock," Dolan said. "I wanted to win my senior year. From 61st (as a freshman) to first is exciting."
Dolan took an early lead with an eagle on No. 3. A long tee shot left her 150 yards from the green, and she stuck her approach shot within two feet of the pin.
Then Dolan survived a bumpy stretch in which she bogeyed three consecutive holes.
"I try not to worry about it because on the next hole, anything can happen," Dolan said.
Dolan birdied No. 9 to make the turn at 1 over. She got back to even with a birdie on the par-5 12th, but she finished 2 over with her second bogey of the back nine. On 17, her putt slid by the edge of the hole.
"She only had bogeys, no doubles in the tournament," Parkway West coach Steve Baxter said. "That's how you win a tournament."
While Dolan was getting ready to eagle No. 3, Cain struggled on the hole, finding two bunkers en route to a double bogey. She followed with a bogey on No. 4 but gained a stroke back on the par-3 No. 5 after her tee shot rolled within inches of the hole and left her a six-foot putt.
Cain finished second with a 149 and joins a short list of four-time medalists, having never finished worse than 14th at state in four years.
Nerinx Hall's Kristen Hamel was fourth with a 153, Blue Springs South's Plern Proomboopa finished fourth with a 154 and Ursuline's Jacque Bardgett took fifth with a 155.
Bardgett improved 5 strokes off her first-day score and shot a 75, which went a long way in helping the Bears claim fourth as a team with a total of 697.
