Arizona’s Fletcher rallies to edge Gaus
at 2nd annual Metropolitan Open at St. Albans

Defending champion Skip Berkmeyer, Chris Naegel share third at even par

Darren Fletcher posted a final-round 71 for a 3-under par 207 to win the 2nd Annual Metropolitan Open by one shot over Tower Tee’s Bob Gaus (67-68-73-208) and three ahead of St. Louis mini-tour professional Chris Naegel (71-71-68-210) and Norwood Hills amateur Skip Berkmeyer (68-68-74-219).

Fletcher (65-71-71-207) made seven birdies in an opening round 65, but really won the tournament by being one of the few to avoid costly bogeys down the stretch. The Phoenix native captured the $6,000 first prize, the biggest of his pro career. The event, conducted by the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, featured the top players from the MAGA and Gateway PGA as well as a handful of mini-tour professionals. The Open was sponsored by St. Albans Realty and co-sponsored by Midwest Bankcentre and Marcone, Inc.

It was Friday the 13th during Round 2 of the 2nd annual Metropolitan Open. But for Saturday’s final round, it was No. 11 that proved unlucky for a couple of golfers at the Country Club of St. Albans.

The 492-yard 11th hole derailed Berkmeyer and one of the challengers, professional Mark Faulkner. Berkmeyer came to No. 11 holding a two-shot lead at 7-under par. He headed to the 12th tee playing the role of pursuer after a triple bogey. Faulkner, a club professional from Marion, Ill., made triple bogey at the same hole. Their troubles allowed Fletcher, a 25-year-old mini-tour pro from Phoenix, Ariz., and Gaus to move in front.

Gaus, however, slipped with consecutive bogeys at Nos. 13, 14 and 15. Still, he had good birdie chances at St. Albans’ final three holes, and needed only one of them to tie Fletcher. Gaus, who has already qualified for next month’s PGA Championship, laced a 6-iron to within 12 feet at the 480-yard final hole. The birdie effort broke sharply right at the cup, giving Fletcher his first significant win in a two-year pro career and his biggest payday at $6,000.

Fletcher, who learned about the Metropolitan Open from St. Louis-area golfer Shane Blankenship, held the first round lead and proved steady throughout the three-day event. Always within striking distance, he continued making pars down the stretch when other contenders lost shots on St. Albans’ demanding closing holes.

Most recently, Fletcher had been competing on the Gateway Tour in Arizona where entry fees are $1,200 an event and the course conditions are suspect. “St. Albans was phenomenal,” said Fletcher, who came to Missouri to attempt to qualify for an upcoming Nationwide Tour event in Springfield, Mo. “I’m used to desert golf where the greens are burned out. You bomb the driver on every hole and it comes down to a chipping and putting contest. This course made you hit every kind of shot.”

Berkmeyer seemingly had all of the shots working too, when he opened up a comfortable lead on the strength of a 3-under 32 on the front nine. After making birdies at Nos. 5-7, he was poised to repeat in the Metropolitan Open. “The course was too tough down the stretch to say it was over,” Berkmeyer said. “But if I had gotten through No. 11 with a par, man, I think maybe it was.”
