MAGA Strikes 5 Year Deal With
Country Club of St. Albans
The 5th Metropolitan Open Championship will be conducted July 8-10 on the Lewis & Clark Course at the Country Club of St. Albans. Today, the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association is proud to announce that St. Albans has agreed to continue that relationship through 2014.
Scott Zone, President of Country Club of St. Albans, had this to say regarding St. Albans relationship with MAGA, “The Country Club of St. Albans is honored to partner with the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association and is thrilled to host the Metropolitan Open for the next five years. We think this Championship is a fantastic event showcasing the area’s best amateur and professional talent. We look forward to working hard with the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association to further the game of golf and promote this Championship!"
A change in the 2010 Open will be registration will be open to any Golf Professional beginning February 1st. In years past, registration was limited to Golf Professionals from within the Gateway PGA Section until a certain date. Forty-two Golf Professionals representing nine (9) states participated in 2009.
The field will be 144 players comprised of Golf Professionals and amateurs who have a USGA Handicap Index of 3.4 or lower and who are a member of or affiliated with a Member Club of MAGA. The format will be a 54-hole stroke play event with a cut after 36 holes to the low 40 and ties. The Champion will receive a gold medal; the Runner-Up a silver medal and low-amateur a silver medal. Golf Professionals will play for a purse of cash and must survive the cut to receive any prize money.
The Country Club of St. Albans, Lewis and Clark course is a Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish design. CC of St. Albans has been a gracious host to many events conducted by the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association. MAGA conducted the 1994 Metropolitan Amateur Championship, won by Jim Holtgrieve; 1998 US Open Qualifying and 2002 US Amateur Qualifying. In 2009, the USGA Men’s State Team Championship was conducted by the USGA, it was won by Pennsylvania.
